The clean energy transition is one of the most significant challenges of our time—but it must be fair and inclusive. That’s why the Outside-INnovation Programme, led by the Centre for Energy Equality in partnership with Three Hands Insight, is putting vulnerable energy consumers at the heart of innovation.
Over 2.3 million UK households live in fuel poverty, facing barriers like affordability and unequal access to energy services. Additionally, many consumers face health challenges which can be exacerbated by the effects of climate change. Traditional energy innovations often overlook these realities. Outside-INnovation flips the script by listening first—ensuring solutions address real-world issues.

Who's involved?
We are excited to be working with several major companies from across the energy sector, including EON, SP Energy Networks, Wales & West Utilities , and British Gas Energy Trust, a leading fuel poverty charity. Industry experts from these companies, who are all committed to a fair and inclusive energy transition, will participate in the workshops with the Lived Experts, listen to the issues that come up in the discussions and help to develop the innovative products and services that address critical needs.
The project kicked off in November 2025, and the Lived Expert workshops are coming up in December 2025 and January 2026.
